People can see nothing around them that is not their own image; everything speaks to them of themselves.
Their very landscape is animated. Obstacles were everywhere.
And they were all interrelated, maintaining a unified reign of poverty.
Their very landscape is animated. Obstacles were everywhere.
And they were all interrelated, maintaining a unified reign of poverty.
This work is inspired by Guy Debord’s theory of dérive — the drifting of body and mind through urban space and psychogeography.
I believe the mind can wander through images — even when the body is confined.
The project also draws on my experience during the pandemic.
Extreme lockdown and control measures triggered a series of social tensions.
During that time, neighborhood committees held power over residents’ basic rights.
But even if the body was detained, the mind remained beyond reach.
The visual elements include fragments of Debord’s imagery, maps of Shanghai, locked doors, and the broken letters spelling “Trust no one.”
Together, they let the spirit of resistance drift through the layers of image and meaning.
